  3D VRML2.0 - Browsers     and     MediaPlayer

the following annotations refer to the adequacy of
3D players/browsers to VRML samples including MP3 audio

CosmoPlayer 2.1 is the most adequate VRML Player for use with MP3 and WAV sounds. This browser fulfills the VRML 2.0 ISO standard and has had more than 20.000.000 downloads.
For the time being, my 3D sound worlds are optimised for the CosmoPlayer and thus you'll enjoy the maximum gain in 3D using MP3 sounds.

ParallelGraphics Cortona v2.2 browser reproduces almost all of the used 3D features used in Space Odyssey. The new version 2.2 (win) has support for multiple sounds in MP3 format but sound localisations seems not to be VRML spec conformant, you'll encounter some irritating sound overlaps. new: pilot version for MAC

Versions up to 2.1 have only partial MP3 sound support. As a result, only the 1.st MP3 sound encountered in a given 3D world containing multiple MP3 sounds will be played.
Anyway, in the same way as the Contact player, all Cortona engines reproduce well all and multiple 3D sounds in a VRML world if present in WAV sound format.

Blaxxun Contact v4.4 and GLView 4.3 will display most of my 3D features, but sometimes reproduce a different light setting and texturing compared to Cosmo- and Cortona-Player. Blaxxun's Contact (read 'Black Sun' in 'Snow Crash' - excellant SF literature) is THE MultiUser Engine No. 1.
Unfortunately Contact has only partial MP3 sound support, i.e. only 1 MP3 sound in a 3D world will be played, IF the Intel RSX 3D driver is present (s. Contact's option menu). On the other hand, any number of WAV formatted sounds is neatly reproduced as 3D audio.

3D-developers:
DEEPMATRIX is a new ressource for realtime 3D and (2d) MP3.

Platinums WorldView 2.1 by default or optionally installed with the MS-IE setup is the least adequate 3d Browser for my 3d worlds. There is no MP3 support at all and features using transparency and fish-eye perspectives are not displayed.

MP3 SUPPORT:   The MS MediaPlayer (vs 5) (current version 7.x) is necessary for MP3 support in VRML worlds. Win98 and MSIE5.0 users know or should check out if they've got the MediaPlayer already installed.
Possibly other installed MP3 Codecs coming MP3 player installations e.g. with WinAmp replay too Mp3 sounds in VRML. Please report by mail.
